In the 1840's, Richard migrated from Onodaga Co. with the Paddock settlement to Cook Co., IL. Richard married his first wife, Mary on October 10 1844. She died giving birth to his first son, Thomas Jefferson in 1845. He married Jane two years later. Jane died in 1853, cause unknown. He married his third wife, Elizabeth January 3 1854.
Richard was in his forties when the Civil War began. He was elected Captain for Company F of the 100th Regiment, Illinios Infantry. His brothers Matthew (5.2) and John Quincy Adams (5.7) served by his side in the 100th. Richard was wounded at Mission Ridge, GA.
After the war Richard spent a year in California following the scent of gold but soon return to farming in Goodings Grove, IL. Richard made a living farming and wood cutting. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Palos IL.
